This pattern celebrates the life of Olaudah Equiano (1745-1797), the former slave who tirelessly campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade.
As a young boy, Equiano was kidnapped for the Triangular Trade – a slave operation which ferried captured Africans to America and onto Europe.
After years of forced-labour, Equiano bought his freedom and became a renowned activist in London, fiercely attacking slavery and demanding its abolition.
When slavery was finally abolished in 1807, Equiano’s contribution was posthumously heralded across the Commonwealth.
