Heron of Alexandria

Heron of Alexandria

This pattern celebrates Heron of Alexandria (c.10 AD – c.70 AD), the Greek inventor and mathematician.

Considered a maverick by his contemporaries, Heron thought outside the box to design and create an eclectic mix of inventions. Heron was the brains behind the first form of steam engine, a device resembling a modern vending machines and even force pumps.

Perhaps his most influential creation was his famous formulae to calculate the areas of triangles that has since enabled and inspired a countless numbers of further discoveries.

Without Heron’s ability to challenge the norms that surrounded him, the world today would look very different indeed.
