This design celebrates John Spilsbury (1739 – 1769), the British cartographer who invented the jigsaw puzzle.
In a time where large swathes of the world still remained uncharted, Spilsbury devised a novel way to inspire inquisitive students to take up his profession.
He dissected his maps into small pieces and had his students enthusiastically piece them back together.
Spilsbury died at the age of 30 never seeing the potential many of his students would reach. Nonetheless, he will always be remembered for his peculiar creativity which laid the foundations for the birth of the modern jigsaw: a challenge that has since both bemused and entertained millions of people.
