These socks celebrate Roger Bacon (c.1220 – c. 1292), the English friar who discovered light and refraction.
Bacon loved to experiment and his interests were broad with subject matters ranging from reforming the calendar to alchemy. His most influential work, however, was arguably on light. This was taken up by Isaac Newton 400 years later and laid the foundations for today’s understandings.
Yet the scientific rigour of Bacon’s experiments was often at odds with his religious duties forcing him to work in utmost secrecy and at one point he was even imprisoned.
Undeterred, Bacon worked on clandestine experiments racking up over a million words of scholarship.
