This design celebrates Walter Smith (1859 – 1946), the British-born father of rock climbing.
Although Eton and Oxford educated, Smith was better known for his athleticism than his academic abilities with rumours flying that one afternoon he had casually broken the 25-foot long jump world record.
Inspired by the relatively popular pastime of fell-scrambling, Smith strove to challenge his physical strength further as he took to scaling Britain’s most treacherous cliffs.
Stories of Smith’s feats spread quickly across Europe and inspired others to follow suit, pushing rock-climbing up the agenda for curious European thrill-seekers.
