“I bought the new James Holman bag in moss green for a nephew's 18th - an outstanding bit of kit - stylish and well made and well priced. The elegant pamphlet about the history of the bag's design and the craftsmen who make it today was the icing on the cake..”

Product Details

This luxurious bag is not only practical but has a secret twist with a hidden design. Handmade in the London borough of Hackney this bag is water-resistant with a quirky interior. Each of our bags has an interior with its own history, inspired by people who do things a little differently.

All our bags are 50cm x 30cm x 30cm (l x h x w) and are handmade by a family run business in London.

Made with…

  • High quality water-resistant canvas
  • Luxury leather trimmings
  • Durable antique brass fittings

The zigzag lining celebrates James Holman (1786 – 1857), the Devonshire-born “Blind Traveller”. The jagged lines on the lining of your bag represent the weaving paths he took as he traversed the world. Aged twenty-five, Holman started to suffer from complete blindness and society condemned him as helpless. Determined to defy all expectations, he travelled an unprecedented quarter of a million miles around the world.

The flower lining celebrates Richard Spruce (1817 – 1893), the Yorkshire-born botanical explorer. The flowers on the lining of your bag celebrate his greatest love on earth: plants. Botany was an unusual career; but even to other botanists, Spruce was curious. He believed populist Victorian naturalists were “utterly misled” in their quests, which too often overlooked what he regarded as the hidden beauty of less fashionable species.
